SONIC & SEGA ALL-STARS RACING

SEGA
PS3 (also on Xbox 360, Wii, DS, PC)

When Nintendo let Super Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo loose on an unsuspecting world back in 1992, little did they know what they were laying the foundations for – more imitators than an Elvis fan convention in Vegas.

Whilst most every character major and minor from Banjo Kazooie to Spongebob Squarepants has put their name to a karting game over the years, all of which bore little dissimilarity to the originator, SEGA have spared their speedy blue mascot Sonic such plagiaristic ignominy. Erm, until now.

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is everything you’d expect from a karting videogame, just riddled with characters famed – and not-so famed - from SEGA’s roster over the years. Several are included from Sonic’s world, including the big bad with the identity crisis Dr Robotnik/Eggman (goo goo ga joob), along with competitors ranging from those stupid monkeys from Samba de Amigo and Super Monkey Ball through to human types like Jacky Bryant from Virtua Fighter and BD Joe from Crazy Taxi. Even failed mascot wussbag Alex Kidd gets to take to the track – as do the awesome Bonanza Bros, doing their bouncy-bouncy thing in a vehicle that is somewhat reminiscent of the Bluesmobile.

It looks like latter day Mario Kart, it plays like Mario Kart – it essentially is Mario Kart. Even the weapons bear uncanny similarities (save for each character having a signature super-destructive move). All of which means S&SASR is a solid karting game that’ll have all the SEGA fan-peeps wetting themselves and poking nyahh-nyahh tongues out at Nintendo as they now have one too.

Just 18 years later.

take me back to the start...
