PES 2013 - PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER

Konami
PS3 (also on Xbox 360)

“Kick it to me! Kick it to me!” Words we often squealed as a kid...

Yet nobody ever did – because they knew that if so, we’d miss ‘it’, trip over ‘it’, or send ‘it’ hurtling somewhere into the stratosphere... but the wrong stratosphere. The appropriate term is “unco as fuck”. So, when Sensible Software’s Microprose Soccer popped up we practiced and practiced until fingers bled (it must have been the summer of ’88...)

We still couldn’t kick a real ball for shit, but give us a virtual one and Ronaldo would’ve cowered in awe. The very same bloke who’s plastered upon the cover of this year’s PES.

24 years is quite a long time, and soccer games have advanced. PES 2013 is so bloody realistic that, once again, we’re reminded of our abject sporting shiteness. We now know what Run DMC were on about when proclaiming ‘It’s Tricky’ – even if that was released in 1986. Bugger, now our ability to analogise is devolving to match our sportiness...

Even brain-forked to its simplest, PES 2013 is challenging for the uninitiated. But it’s not meant for such plebeians. The expectation seems apparent that fans have evolved with it, through various brilliant decisions and a few naff ones. These skilled types – who’d likely have bullied us mercilessly at school - will revel in advances to feeling in control of the little dudes running around inside the telly. Run, run, fake, run, dribble, baulk, nyahh, pass, shoot – the level of controllability is quite stunning.

Abilities vary depending upon which real (or in some cases fake) players the little fellas are modelled upon, and oodles of worldwide leagues are included. Online, player editors, training – all the other stuff you expect is present.

Looking for a remarkably deep soccer experience that rewards patience, skill and tactical savvy? Then all we are saying is give PES a chance...

take me back to the start...
