NEW SUPER MARIO BROS WII

Nintendo
Wii

If we have to introduce Mario then you’re likely either just waking from a coma or the most ignorant person on Earth. Erm, or perhaps The Who’s Tommy. The little Italian plumber is an icon and, befitting of an icon, much like bands that have lasted the distance (and Fall Out Boy) he has a greatest hits package of sorts in New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Giving the classic side-scrolling platform gaming style that dates back to the original Nintendo Entertainment System in the ’80s a Noughties spit and polish, whilst combining the best bits from the little guy’s numerous adventures through the years, isn’t all NSMBW does, though. As well as looking funky-as, new levels have been concocted, with new enemies and new weapons with which to fight them, including a propeller suit and a penguin suit – flippers and all. Awwwwww!

The big new addition to the series, however, comes in the form of simultaneous four-player aceness. Yep, Mario, Luigi and two Toads can all party-on at once, and best of all you can be all sugary niceness and cooperativeness, or as nasty as the nastiest of nasty things and push everybody around as if you’re channelling Wario. Sweet!

Mercifully there isn’t a lot of gimmicky waggling, save for the odd flick or tilt. The Wiimote is held on its side much like a traditional controller, and that’s the way it should be. Original frustrations remain, but it wouldn’t be Mario without them. 25 years on, Nintendo still rule the platform genre – let’s-a go!

take me back to the start...
