MARIO
& SONIC AT THE LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES
SEGA
Wii
What
have we done with our life? Is this the end when three worlds
collide?
Why the misappropriation of lyrics from ace, underrated ’90s indies
Inspiral Carpets? Well, we’re in London baby – yeah - and they’re as
London as... what’s that? They’re from up north? Fook!
Hey, we got one bit right, three worlds do actually collide here:
Mario and associates, Sonic and acquaintances and London with its
officially licensed venues and landmarks. We wanted to add “and
Itchy with his fleas”, but we’re possibly the only people ever who
remember King Leonardo’s flea-draggled sibling.
Yep, it’s almost five-ringed circus time again, as the Olympics
descend on London mid-2012. So, grab this and you’ve plenty of time
to couch practice. In a Koopa-shell, it’s Hypersports,
Summer Games and such for the now crowd, obviously with somewhat
of a graphical overhaul, assorted extra angles and the chance for
four to go head-to-head. There’re also more events, 21 realistic
(well, as realistic as it gets flinging speedy blue hedgehogs and
stumpy moustachioed plumbers about) and 10 ‘dream’ events, set in
worlds that’ll be familiar to diehard followers of either titular
mascot’s travails.
Otherwise, you can plod around in ‘London Party’, seeing the sights,
chatting to natives and collecting stickers. In fact, collectibles
ooze from most every screen, including scratchy cards, which we’re
not ensurely tire we’d want our munchkins getting hooked on.
Gambling’s bad, m’kay?
Content-wise just give this a gold medal and be done with it. The
big letdown, however, is a throwback to earlier games in the series
– convoluted controls. It’s a massive misconception that the Wiimote
simplifies things. Some will find frustration here an absolute cow,
especially if popped on at a party.
Mind you, digging Waluigi embracing his inner flower in synchronised
swimming is cool as fuck...
