HITMAN: ABSOLUTION
Square Enix
PS3 (also on Xbox 360, PC)
Listen (ooh-wah-oo), do you wanna know a secret? Do you promise not
to tell?
Well, remember how Agent 47 supposedly carked it, leaving Maxwell
Smart in charge of the Guild of Surviving CONTROL Agents’ union
negotiations? Well, he didn’t really die. He just shaved his bonce,
got a barcode tatt, turned his core temperature way down and went
all undercover hitman. After all, there are only so many tree trunks
with little sliding panels that you can hide in before cracking the
shits.
Yes, 47’s back after quite some absence. The first thing to note is
that this is a stealth game. Now, what does Mr Oxford have to say
about the word?
stealth
Pronunciation: /stɛlθ/
Definition of stealth
noun
1 [mass noun] cautious and surreptitious action or movement:
the silence and stealth of a hungry cat
So, that means being all quiet and such, yeah? Good, because that’s
what you get. If you’re looking for something that’s all guns
blazing, why howdy there, darned tootin’, yee-haw,
bang-bang-shoot-shoot then this ain’t for you. Sure, you can play
that way, but you’ll last about as long as a Mars Bar that’s
inadvertently parachuted into a fatty boombah farm.
The thrill of H:A is in that sneakiness. Creepy-creeping,
waiting, hiding... using instincts, biding time for that perfect strike moment, and
having contingencies to escape the inevitable heat you’ll attract
from making your kill – be it run like fuck, hide more, nick
somebody’s clobber or something possibly MacGyverish.
Levels are plentiful. Things can feel linear, even if there are
usually multiple choice solutions, so those unwilling to explore may
feel immersionally scuppered. Out-of-the-box constant quicktime
event buttons splattering all over the screen are rather buzzkilly,
too.
Still, if you’re looking for something that’s dark, engrossing and a
bit more grownup thinky-person’s, then check out Hitman:
Absolution... (Check out, barcode – BAM!)
