GROOVIN' BLOCKS

Empty Clip Studios
PS3/PSN (also on Wii)

We can’t type another word before saying it. Daggiest. Game name. Ever.

Right, now that’s out of the way…

Groovin’ Blocks is a simple but rather fiendishly addictive puzzle game, not a million miles removed from Lumines turned on its side. Don’t know Lumines? Erm, how about quite similar to Columns then? Nope? Oh for feck’s sake, it’s kinda like Tetris, but different, m’kay?!

Yep, blocks of various colours fall into a receptacle, and you have to shuffle them about with an eye to having them clear sections of blockular build-up from below before you hit the top and it’s game over man, game over. The key original twist that GB has is that it’s also a rhythm game. You don’t get to jump around with your placcy geetaw or anything like that, but a key to scoring enough to progress is an ability to keep a beat to which you drop block clusters. If you’re Don ‘No Soul’ Simmons then we suggest you look elsewhere.

Packed full of techno-tinged choons that vary from trippy to DOOFy, there’s plenty of variety musically, and quite the challenge to earn enough stars to unlock later levels and power-ups. There’s also local two-player modes, but the only online is high scores, and judging by where we were ranking we’re either a: awesome or b: not enough people are buying this.

Groovin’ Blocks is kinda the SuBo of PSN games. It may not be much chop to look at, but it has a certain charm that lures you in anyway.

take me back to the start...
