DARKSIDERS

THQ
PS3 (also on Xbox 360, PC)

2010’s but a wee bub, and already we have a game of biblical proportions – literally, as it’s chock full of fire, brimstone, apocalyptic horsemen and stuff, along with more angels and demons than Dan Brown has dollars in his account. Well, possibly...

The brainchild of comic artist Joe Madureira, hang out with Darksiders for a while and it all seems vaguely familiar, whilst chucking an exhilarating ride at you all the same. Taking cues from classic arcade/adventure games such as Nintendo’s Zelda series, it has almost as much focus on exploration and nutting out puzzles as it does the hacking and the slashing and the dismembering and the killingness.

It’s all set in a world slightly in the future where somebody triggered the four horsemen of the apocalypse’s work ethic when it done wasn’t supposed to have been set off like. So, you as War are doing the goddamn-pissed-off thing, ripping apart all manner of ungodly – and godly - spawn in your quest for redemption.

Whilst the combat starts out all rather samey – just bashing several shades of shite out of things with your ‘chaoseater’ blade – progress rewards, bringing greater oomph in the weaponry department. The puzzles and general challenge also amp up smoothly, so nothing jars too much. Well, save for the likes of a massive bad guy you have to knock off by hurling cars – and that’s only on the tutorial level!

War, huh, good lord, what is he good for? Absolutely carrots – erm, no (pardon our brain fart), absolutely awesomeness (just say it again...)

take me back to the start...
