ALIENS VS PREDATOR

SEGA
PS3 (also on Xbox 360, PC)

Taking two popular characters and banging them together has long been a staple, sometimes cynical, move of comic book creators. Yet possibly one of the stretchiest stretches, taking the two Fox film properties Aliens and Predator and sticking a ‘vs.’ in-between them has actually been one of the most inspired and, indeed, popular.

So, the comic book success led to films and invariably games, with 1999’s PC incarnation of AvP a point of reverence for fans everywhere, elevating its developers Rebellion to geek god status.

A decade on, Rebellion have revisited the franchise, bringing us this much-anticipated first person shooter which can be played from the point of view of an Alien or Predator – the announcement of which caused much drool from fans – or the decidedly less sexy Colonial Marine.

So, is it any good? Well, if you’re a fan-boy (or, indeed, fan-gal) you’re gonna absolutely love it. There’s atmosphere akin to the movies aplenty – especially sonically – and obviously the titular characters of the two franchises involved are the prime focus of every part of the game. We’re talking faithful. There are also moments that will have your pulse racing faster than Usain Bolt on fire as you do face time with an alien, or realise that there’s a Predator within whisper-sweet-nothings proximity.

However, if you’re not a fan and are just looking to get your FPS ya-yas out, you’re going to encounter a game that looks somewhat dated and unpolished compared to other recent offerings such as Bioshock 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2.

take me back to the start...
